july 2016: launch of new furniture series, la vela

This timber and concrete dining/conference table is called la vela (the sail) – a reflection on its billowing concrete legs. To us, it also represents a new tack in our furniture making.

We have explored the sculptural potential of concrete in many different applications, including basins, benchtops, wall panels and our recent sculpture series – na ho’okele (The Steerers). These diverse pieces have sparked new ideas and allowed us to develop innovative techniques to add to our repertoire. Escaping the linear confines which dominate our living spaces, we are finding ways to create objects with movement in all directions.

La vela is the first of two new table/bench seat series. Its sculpted concrete legs have been worked by hand at each point of the process, from pouring to curing and finishing. Their shape gives the table a sense of lightness and movement, while providing ample legroom. La vela’s timber top has gently curved sides, facilitating conversation and giving the table a sense of life. Edges are hand shaped, creating a moving profile that is both elegant and soft to touch. The benches have a hand shaped timber seat and sculpted concrete legs.

La vela dining table and benches can be custom made to any size with a range of timbers, concrete colours and aggregates.

The second addition to our table/bench seat series is soon to be photographed. It features sculpted concrete legs and a concrete top, making it ideally suited to both indoor and outdoor usage. We look forward to sharing this new product series with you shortly!
